First time with a personal trainer

I just got back from my first training session with a Personal Trainer (PT) at the gym. It's an expensive affair ($50 per 1/2 hour), so it's taken me a long time to take the plunge. And it's not a new years resolution, it just happens to be the start of January right now.

I decided to sign up because I've been training rather actively in the last 6 months, and I want to make sure that I've got the correct technique, posture, exercises, and of course to be pushed further as well. You know, better quality.

I'm not nearly as exhausted as I expected to be after a first PT session, but I did warn her (my trainer) that my back is more sore than usual today.

I like professionalism

The pleasant surprise was how professional she was. I thought it'd be mostly a "Push harder! Give me five more!" kind of thing, but she thought me about my body type (didn't know I had one) and why what kind of training would affect me in which ways, and seemed genuinely interested in helping me. She had done a fair bit of homework - going through my previous routines (they are all stored in a spreadsheet at the gym), monitoring my progress and gave me an evaluation based on that. Any questions I had was answered well, so I feel like I've learned a whole lot about my body and muscles etc. in general that I didn't know when I woke up this morning.

She also wants to recommend me to a chiropractor/deep-tissue muscle specialist to have a closer look at my back problems. And when I asked how much he would cost she said she'd organise it so I don't have to pay for the first appointment, but pay if I choose to continue with him. Also she swears by him, because he has sorted out her own injury. All this so she can push me harder while knowing that my back can take it. Which I'm all happy about, my complete lack of core strength and shitty back is the reason why I started training in the first place.

I'm really exited about the idea that I may not have to worry (as much) about my back anymore.

1st January: The official feel good about doing nothing day.

I had a great time at The Bakery last night, with most of my friends there, and Dam-Funk, Gaslamp Killer, Flying Lotus and Harmonic 313 all playing. Naturally I woke up today with the traditional hangover, but that's the good thing about New Years Day. It's expected to do as little as possible, and just hang out with friends in similar states of mind.

After a facebook status update and a few SMS' we had breakfast at The Merchant on Baufort street. They were open and busy, but we still got a good table. Possibly because we were having breakfast at 3pm. Breakfast was Bloody Marys and Chorizo, egg and vegetables on toast. Tasty! Apart from us two we had Frank, Trish, Fahmi, Ciara, Fiona and Chris there. Jules also honoured us with a brief visit in-between pints at the Queens.

We then relocated to City Beach to lay in the shade of what was left of this 35 degree day. And had this years first swim, which felt great.

For dinner we had fish and chips from the Broker and his Wife in the park next to it, before we made a move for Planet Video where we ended up getting Zombie Land. First time I've seen a zombie movie in years, and it was pretty funny.

And the best thing? All this slacking around, doing nothing, with good friends, and not having to feel even a hint of bad consciousness for any "shoulds" I usually have nagging at the back of my mind.

Happy 2011 everybody.
